The Community sub group of Wrexham Supporters Trust have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for the past three months setting up a partnership project with the Alzheimer Society in Wales that is anticipated will run for a year and hopefully longer.
The joint project is based upon a successful pilot that was run in Glasgow called Memories FC. It will be aligned with the Alzheimer Society's existing befriending project but with a twist; because, those sufferers of dementia who enjoyed football will now be able to participate in small groups in the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium\'s executive boxes reminiscing about past Wrexham FC glory days.
The Alzheimer Society will provide volunteer befrienders with all the necessary training required as well as ensuring that the specific needs and requirements of dementia sufferers are being met throughout the project. The role of Wrexham Supporters Trust will be to co-ordinate the collection and provision of Wrexham FC memorabilia throughout the project.
To get the project started we are seeking volunteer befrienders. So, if you are looking for a new way of sharing your passion of football with others, then why not get involved?
Memories FC is a great way for you to share your passion for the game and help local football supporters living with dementia continue to be part of the footballing community.
Volunteer to be involved with the small monthly groups held at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium, use Wrexham FC memorabilia to encourage football
supporter chat about teams and matches of the past.
