A REPORT on Wrexham Football Club produced by an international supporters' association has been endorsed by the town's AM and MP.

Lesley Griffiths AM asked Supporters Direct to investigate and report back on the two bidders - Wrexham Supporters' Trust and local businesswoman Stephanie Booth  - currently vying to take over the town's football club. Both Lesley and Wrexham MP Ian Lucas have previously said they want to see community ownership of the football club and Racecourse Ground. In a letter accompanying their report, Supporters Direct say:

"Most clubs can be owned by people from the community, and can often engage in community-focussed activities and so we should be clear that when we speak of community ownership in football, we mean that either the club or the legal entity having the controlling stake must be:

·         A one member, one vote' organisation

·         Generating an operating surplus each year, which is reinvested

·         Inclusive in terms of the financial commitment it asks and in its wider operations

·         Transparent and accountable to its stakeholders and supporters."

Lesley said: "One thing all fans can agree on is that we all want to see much needed stability at Wrexham Football Club. "Having a strong belief in community ownership, I wanted to ask experts in the field for their opinions.

"The Supporters Direct report makes clear that warm words are not enough to protect clubs for the community and I agree strongly with that view. "I am also concerned that any owner would have to comply with the rules laid down by the football authorities." And Ian added: "I have long maintained that a community approach - one which sets the community interest in stone - is the way forward for the club. I have had the benefit of many meetings with Wrexham Supporters' Trust over the past few years and I know they share that vision.

"Supporters Direct have produced a strong report which I believe merits careful consideration for all those interested in the future of Wrexham Football Club."
