Cooperation is the aim for town pub and football supporters

logo-saith-seren2A Wrexham pub run as a cooperative is backing another local cooperative with a fund-raising social this Saturday.

Saith Seren opened as a community-run pub in January in Chester Street, Wrexham, and this Saturday will be hosting a fundraiser for the Wrexham Supporters' Trust, another community-run cooperative now running Wrexham FC.

The chair of Saith Seren is Marc Jones, who said it was fitting that the two cooperatives were working together in the Year of the Cooperative. He said: "This has been a very special year for Wrexham with two cooperatives starting to run their ventures in the past 12 months. The WST has been an inspiration in the way it has patiently built up expertise to run the football club and almost achieved promotion in its first year in charge.

"Saith Seren is also ambitious. We opened our doors as a pub serving local food less than five months ago and are still working on transforming the upstairs into a suite of offices, meeting rooms and classrooms for Welsh lessons. That work will be complete by the autumn and we will continue to develop the vision we had in forming the coop. The support we've had from the hundreds of adults learning Welsh in the county has been wonderful.

"More than 100 people have invested at least £100 into the venture already and we will soon be offering a second share issue to enable others to become members and participate in Saith Seren's ongoing development as a Welsh centre for everyone in Wrexham.

"As both the WST and Saith Seren continue to develop, it's fitting that we host a fundraiser organised by the WST with Attila the Stockbroker and the Declan Swans this Saturday night. It looks like being a sell-out with tickets at only £5 and hopefully both cooperatives will benefit from the event."

Saith Seren is the Welsh name for the old Seven Stars pub, a listed Victorian building in the town centre. It has quickly established itself as a popular live music venue and recently hosted a successful comedy night with TV comedian Tudur Owen.
